Butter yellow is having a moment — but "everywhere" and "yours" are two different things entirely. Before you buy into any colour trend, the only question worth asking is whether it actually works with your undertone, not with the season.

The test is simple enough. Hold the colour under your jaw in daylight — nothing flattering about overhead lighting or a phone screen. Warm undertones, golden or olive-leaning skin, tend to sit beautifully next to butter yellow. It's close enough to your own warmth that it lifts you rather than fighting you. If your skin looks brighter, rested, more awake — that's genuine, not wishful thinking.

Cooler or very fair undertones often get the opposite result: a slightly tired, faded look, regardless of how well it photographed on someone else entirely.

The shift worth making is this — stop asking "is this in fashion right now" and start asking "does this actually suit me, full stop." A colour that passes that test isn't a seasonal purchase. It's something you'll still be reaching for years from now and most probably a piece that reflects other colours and pieces in your wardrobe - because your starting to ask the same questions with them too.

Once you know it's yours, the real skill is in the wearing of it — making a trend colour sit as though it's always belonged in your wardrobe, rather than a one-season fling.

Start small. Worn near the face — a blouse, a soft knit, a scarf — does far more work than committing head to toe. Pair it back with what you already own: a camel coat, a stone trouser, a good chocolate boot will anchor it and stop it looking like a costume choice.

Fabric matters more than people credit. Silk or a proper brushed cotton or cashmere knit (depending on the season your in) reads as considered; the same shade in something stiff and synthetic reads as exactly what it is — bought for the moment, not for you.

And think a little further ahead. Choose it in a shape you already reach for often, so it slots straight into your rotation rather than sitting there, waiting for a special occasion that never quite arrives.
